He ends up attempting to take the people of the village to Hong Kong in a small, rotten paddle steamer.Most of the location filming was done at historic China Camp in Marin County, Ca. Artificial sets and buildings were added to create a small Chinese village.

John Wayne also frequented Sabella's of Marin, Mill Valley. His favorite waitress was Freida and he loved Steamed Clams.

Thanks Rosalind for that piece of trivia. He also dined at Marin Joe's in Corte Madera as did Lauren Bacall and he based his private Cessna airplane at the small S.F. Bay Air Port, which was located in what is now the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael.
